GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a condition characterized by the backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus. This typically occurs due to dysfunction or weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a valve-like structure between the stomach and the esophagus that normally prevents stomach acid and food from refluxing into the esophagus.

Treatment for GERD involves lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes surgical intervention. Adjusting dietary habits to avoid acidic and fatty foods is important. Medications such as antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used, while surgery is rarely necessary. GERD treatment is individualized and requires regular monitoring to manage symptoms effectively and prevent complications.
